WHO IS DJ KOOL KID??

Trinidad-born and Bronx native, Adrian Lewis’ first fell in-love with hip-hop upon seeing the 1992 Ernest Dickerson film, Juice. Inspired by the deejay battle, the expression of emotion and the direction of urban music; DJ Kool Kid was born into a craft that he would master quickly. Kool Kid received his first set of turntables on his fourteenth birthday as result of missing the last bus to Six Flags Great Adventure.

While most 14 year-old teenagers occupied their time with the latest fashion trend, Kool Kid became a master turntablist and began networking his way on to New York City’s exclusive nightclub\lounge circuit.

Kool Kid received his first break from Uptown Records executive, Chuck Bone that offered him the opportunity to open for hip-hop legend DJ Red Alert at Tavern On the Green. Upon seeing this young kid capture and enthrall the crowd with his style and charisma, Red Alert allowed Kool Kid to extend his set, while providing him with advice on how to improve his technique. DJ Red Alert has become a close friend and mentor, always reminding Kool Kid to have fun, be free and remember that the room is your friend.

At the age of 19, mix-tape legend Justo, received a call from a casting director that was looking for a deejay for Nickelodeon’s house band. Kool Kid’s audition was actually a week late following the final calls for the television network. However, after some persistence and persuading, Kool Kid auditioned for the network that was in the middle of choosing the final members of the band. Fate would shine upon, Adrian Lewis, in which Saturday Night Live’s bandleader – Paul Schaffer would listen to Kool Kid’s audition tape and immediately knew that he had found his deejay.

Kool Kid juggled his career between being the official deejay of Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam tour and the resident deejay of Nickelodeon’s house band. Appearing on the network specials as well as flying from city to city for each stop of the tour, Kool Kid continued to make mix-tapes that captured his hometown fans. With an ear to the street and always on the look out for something new, his frequent travel provided Kool Kid with the opportunity to discover new artists that were hungry to break into music business. Not only did Kool Kid pitch his own ideas to the labels to create his mix-tapes with their emerging artists, but also he found his own.

Crowned the “Hood Legend” by his cousin Bronx, NY, DJ Supreme AKA the Politician. Kool Kid has a panache for exposing new talent to his fans and A&R record label heads that he has discovered in different hoods\cities from all across of the country. Kool Kid has introduced or broke artists such as Eminem, Trey Songz, Red Café, J-Hood, and Sporty Thieves, just to name a few. Kool Kid wanted to extend the same opportunity to young talented artists to have their voice heard. He takes risks on new talent just as Chuck Bone had taken a risk upon him when he was 14 years old.

Taking notice of Kool Kid’s ability to rock a party and keep the crowd moving, a well-known music mogul, responsible for superstar acts Bow Wow, Jagged Edge, and Usher, began to inquire about this young talented DJ. The mogul, non other than Jermaine Dupri, was then formulating his own DJ crew and invited Kid to become a part of the DEF DJ’s (a talented team of DJ’s from all areas of music; club, mix-tape and radio). When asked about his blending style on the 1’s and 2’s, Kool Kid finds it hard to describe. “I’ve been blessed, in which I can am able to do it all. Not every deejay can be a successful tour deejay, mix-tape deejay, club deejay and can collaborate with a band.”

Despite his tireless work ethic, Kool Kid still manages to create no less than four mix-tapes a month. A task that he will never stop doing and if it were possible, he would create a mix-tape everyday for his fans. DJ Kool Kid has been the exclusive tour deejay of Capone and Noregea, Keith Sweat and Jason Weaver. He has worked with many well-known urban artists: David Banner, Jermaine Dupree, Paul Wall and The Lox.

What is in store for the future for DJ Kool Kid? He his currently on tour with Jive Record’s Grammy nominated R&B artist Joe. Mastering his new role as producer with his newly discovered artists Mack Da’ Messenger and Emerald Stone. However, DJ Kool Kid continues to rock the party scene in New York City clubs as well as out of state venues in Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Japan.
